Since its grand opening in 1989, Fibes has welcomed all sorts of events, from trade fairs to conferences, through to musical shows, annual congresses and other forms of MICE events. Thanks to its impressive infrastructure, the Conference and Exhibition Centre has become the go-to venue to host the largest events in Seville and a leading venue in Spain. Throughout the years, Fibes has helped to dynamise Seville’s events industry, and in 2018 Fibes will continue to add its long list of events to the city’s already full calendar of events. In this article, we’ve compiled a short list of 8 events taking place in Seville in 2018. An eclectic list that mixes traditional yearly events with contemporary musical festivals, film festivals, fairs, and symphonic shows. For more upcoming events in Seville, read on until the bottom of this article where we provide further links to events taking place at Fibes.
#1 La Feria de Abril
We start off our list with arguably the most popular event in Seville: the famous Feria de Abril (Seville Fair), which takes place in April or May each year. In terms of size and popularity, events in Seville don’t come larger than this! In 2017, an estimated 3.6 to 4 million people visited the Feria grounds during the week-long festivities – a 20% increase on 2016. Each year, the Feria brings in approximately 700 millones euros, representing more than 3% of Seville’s GDP. The event was first held in 1847 as a livestock fair but very rapidly developed into a full week of festivities with parades on horseback, rides in horse-drawn carriages, live flamenco music and dancing, and a variety of dishes and beverages available throughout the week. This is one event in Seville not to be missed in 2018!
#2 El Falla in Seville
Cadiz’s Carnival is another of the great events that take place every year in Andalusia. Each year, thousands of viewers follow the performances of the best ‘chirigotas’ (carnival groups) who are competing to be crowned the best group of the year! Fibes will celebrate “El Falla en Sevilla” on 23rd and 24th February 2018, welcoming the sixth Great Gala of the Carnival of Cadiz. The event will host some of the best chirigotas of the moment as well as past winners, in a night based on the greatest and most creative musical event in the South of Spain.
#3 Semana Santa (Holy Week in Seville)
Holy Week in Seville is a close contender to the Feria de Abril in terms of popularity, particularly for the more devout locals. Every year, a total of 71 brotherhoods (“hermandades”) and their processions take over the streets of Seville the week leading up to Easter Sunday. Processions include full marching bands, religious relics carried by bearers, and penitents. Originating from the Middle Ages, the Semana Santa has been a staple in the heart of Seville for many years, and one that brings a lot of activity to the many bars and street vendors across the city.
#4 Festival de Cine Europeo de Sevilla
The European Film Festival has been taking place in Seville each year since 2001, occupying a number of projection rooms and cinemas such as those in Seville’s Nervión Plaza and the Lope de Vega theatre. The aim of the festival is to offer a yearly meeting point for new creators and established artists and a new platform for the promotion of European cinema. Passes are available to the general public each year. More information is available on the festival website.
#5 Symphonic Rhapsody of Queen
Fans of Queen’s music will rejoice at the news that the Symphonic Rhapsody of Queen is coming to Fibes in Seville in January 2018! The name says it all: a musical show with a full symphonic orchestra, a rock band and a cast of international singers performing Queen’s biggest hits. An event not to be missed! #6 SIMOF 2018: flamenco fashion fair
The 24th edition of the annual fair centred around flamenco fashion (the “Salón Internacional de la Moda Flamenca”) comes to Fibes in Seville from 1st to 4th February 2018. Every year, Seville hosts the first professional fair designed to showcase all the latest trends of the traditional clothing style. One of the most important fashion trade shows in Spain. #7 Festival Interestelar 2018
Festival Interstelar returns to Seville in May 2018, each year confirming its status as Seville’s best contemporary music festival. Taking place in the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC), the festival has already attracted some of the biggest names on the current Spanish indie-rock scene including Los Planetas, Loquillo, Love of Lesbian, Fangoria, Sidonie, Second, La Habitación Roja, and many more.
