12 Jun ECFS 2017: the European Cystic Fibrosis Conference closes a successful 40th edition at Fibes
Thus concludes a successful 40th edition of the European Cystic Fibrosis Conference ECFS 2017 at Fibes. Four days of plenary sessions, courses, symposia, special interest groups, workshops, and meet the experts sessions that temporarily converted Seville’s Conference and Exhibition Centre Fibes II into an international forum for all with a common interest in the genetic disorder cystic fibrosis.
ECFS 2017: an international conference
Organised by the European Cystic Fibrosis Society (ECFS), the international conference was first held in Stockholm in 1970 to facilitate the acquisition and distribution of knowledge and research in the field. Throughout the four last decades, it has travelled to the largest cities and venues across Europe. Every year the conference attracts around 2,500 delegates, 80% of them from Europe and 20% from the rest of the world. The conference programme for this 40th edition was put together by an invited scientific committee comprising members from 15 different European countries. The programme included topics covering the entire spectrum of cystic fibrosis related issues. This year attracted 2,345 participants from 54 countries.
ECFS 2017 programme
The event started on Tuesday 6th and Wednesday 7th with three parallel pre-conference courses: a Physiotherapy Short Course intended for physiotherapists, physical or respiratory therapists, and a Tour of Cystic Fibrosis course, along with its equivalent Spanish-language course “Un recorrido por la Fibrosis Quística”, intended for early career medical and paramedical health care workers involved in CF care and /or CF research. The conference officially launched with an Opening Plenary in Fibes II Auditorium I on Wednesday 7th and with the opening of its Exhibition space, which welcomed a range of sponsors and exhibitors from the industry such as Vertex, Teva, Gilead, Horizon Pharma, Mylan, Novartis and more.
The conference continued until Saturday with over 30 symposia and over 20 workshops, plus a number of other activities including case presentations and interactive poster presentations for which the ECFS had received abstracts throughout the year. Abstracts submitted for the event covered a variety of categories on the subject of cystic fibrosis including genetics, diagnosis, screening, immunology, microbiology, etc. An official Conference “Get-Together” was also organised in the famous Metropol Parasol (commonly known as “Las Setas”) in the city centre on the Friday night.
FIBES II infrastructure and accessibility for ECFS 2017
For an international conference the size of ECFS 2017, FIBES II gave access to most of the areas available in its centre: 3 auditoria with a total capacity of 3,200 people, over 2.500m2 of exhibition space, multipurpose rooms, and its catering area. In coordination with Seville’s transportation network TUSSAM, ECFS and FIBES provided transportation cards to all delegates. The cards came pre-loaded with enough credit for at least four return trips between the city centre and the congress centre. Shuttle bus services, taxis, and suburban trains were available to transport incoming delegates from Seville’s international airport San Pablo and main railway stations Santa Justa and San Bernardo. Hotel packages were also provided across the city.
