The 16th edition of the Feria de la Ciencia, the event in Seville for science and culture and a leading science trade fair in Spain, returns to FIBES Conference and Exhibition Centre in Seville. Carmen Diaz Sanz, president of La Divulgación de la Ciencia; Josechu Ferreras, fair director; and Teresa Cruz, director of La Fundación Descubre will proceed with the inauguration of the fair at 10:30, giving a tour of the institutions to various authorities.
- Location: FIBES Conference and Exhibition Centre (your venue in Spain for MICE events and shows)
- Days: 3, 4, and 5 of May
- Schedule: Thursday and Friday 10:00 – 19:00 and Saturday 11:00 – 20:00
La Sociedad Andaluza para la Divulgación de la Ciencia (SADC) and La Fundación Descubre, are organizing the 16th edition of the Science Trade Fair, which has come to be one of Andalusia’s main scientific and cultural events. The fair is being funded by La Fundación Española de la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT), El Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad, among other organizations.
The students, coming from various institutions, become the true leading figures of the fair by presenting their new projects to the visitors and having them participate. However, the Fair also maintains space for investigative centers, university faculties, museums, and companies such as El Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), El Centro Nacional de Aceleradores, La Universidad de Sevilla, La Universidad Pablo de Olavide, Red Eléctrica de España, PCT Cartuja or Fundación Ayesa.
The projects developed in the trade fair correspond to various scientific disciplines, for example physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, or tech, even though the Feria de la Ciencia usually focusses on one main theme every year. This year the main themes are: the brain and neuroscience, conservation of biodiversity, cultural heritage and STEM+A (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and arts). Furthermore, “STEM GIRLS Friday” makes an appearance on the event program for the first time this year, consisting of science chats for girls.
Without losing perspective of its main objective – spreading knowledge and making science accessible to the public – the trade fair boasts 124 stands this year, with over 6,000 students and 800 professors in attendance. Around 700 professional researchers and personnel from other organizations are also scheduled to appear. Also worthy of highlighting is the fact that the Sociedad Latinoamericana de Ciencia y Tecnología (SOLACYT) will be sending young aspiring learners from Colombia and Mexico.
Activate your brain with toys, Optimus Home, The Technology within your reach, or the young geniuses “react with science”, are just a few of the projects that will be exhibited during this trade fair. A new feature for this year is a stand called “Experiment. Families and young people talking about science”, which will be held on Saturday and will give people the opportunity to enjoy talking about science with groups of friends or families.
Competitions and games will also be organized, for example; EntreREDes in stand 8, held by Red Eléctrica de España; Magallanes y la Ciencia by Isla Mágica, in stand 31; or Gymkhana Lab-Ciencia by Fundación Cajasol, in stand 48. The Centro de Investigaciones Científicas Isla de La Cartuja will hand out the cicCartuja price for future scientists “Premio cicCartuja a futuros Científicos”, an acknowledgement of the projects for science awareness created by high school students for the trade fair. At 18:00 tomorrow, FIBES will also host a debate titled “We’re going to speak about… climate change in Andalusia”.
Just like every year, the main objective of the trade fair consists of spreading science awareness, not only within educational institutions, but to all parts of society, stimulating an interest in scientific inquiry and culture.
